Laureate 2018

Michel Pradolini received the P&V Foundation's 2018 Citizenship Award

The P&V Foundation gave out its 14th Citizenship Award on 13th November 2018 to Michel Pradolini. The Citizenship Award is an annual award conferred to a person, initiative or organisation, of Belgian or international origin, whose activity has shown exemplary commitment to promoting an open, democratic, tolerant society.

A Belgian and socially committed businessman

Since 2005, the Citizenship Prize has been awarded annually to people from Belgium or elsewhere who are committed to an open, democratic and tolerant society.

Since 2015, the Citizenship Award has aimed to underline that it is possible to be an exemplary citizen in socially responsible institutions, such as government administrations, scientific organisations, business, the media, etc. In 2017, the award put the spotlight on the academic world. In 2018, it focuses on social action in the broad sense.

This year, the jury chose to reward a Belgian personality. Michel Pradolini is not only a successful and socially committed business owner but he is also the founder and chairman of City Pirates, a broadly supported social project and football club, active in several districts of Antwerp, which currently numbers about 1200 young people while waiting lists continue to grow.

The project City Pirates is not only centred around football. The club wants to highlight the social role of football, and today also of music and dance. According to Michel Pradolini, these three disciplines constitute a mean of social cohesion in disadvantaged districts of Antwerp where many young people are growing in relative poverty. Children and young people receive in City Pirates (game) opportunities and perspectives. They can also develop skills, with consideration for equality, respect and commitment.

The P&V Foundation chose to give out its Citizenship Award to Michel Pradolini for his societal commitment. Under his management, City Pirates has become a truly social and inclusive project which does not only reach young people but also involves families. This project also establishes links with social bodies such as welfare, school, youth court and work.

The jury appreciates this project because it is also an exemplary model of integration within a big city. Not a reactive or a charity project, but a truly structural and proactive project. The theme of migration continues to divide our society, which is why the jury realized that is was essential to highlight a project that promotes solidarity in the broad sense.

In the struggle against the division, the alienation, the fatalism and the individualisation of our society, Michel Pradolini perfectly embodies the values the Foundation stands for: solidarity, emancipation, citizenship and participation.
